Multiple Intelligences - Ecology
Grade Level:  Kindergarten


Background:
Children will become aware of the importance of taking care of the earth. Through readings, discussions and walks,  students will identilfy ways people care for the earth in our community.

Task:
The children will be invited to brainstorm a list of things they can do to help make our world a better place.  Discuss the importance of recycling at home.

Projects Created:
  • As a class project students will create a worm hotel.
  • Students will develop print awareness by learning poetry and songs about ecology.
  • Students will each make their own "Dirt Dessert".
  • Students will create a multimedia project about ecology using Imagination Express- Neighborhood or Storybook Weaver Software 
  • As a class project students will make their own recycled paper.
  • Students will go on a walk to discover ways in which people care for the earth in our community. 
  • Following the walk, students will return to school and draw a picture or write a sentence descibing one way in which they saw someone helping take care of the earth.
     

  • Process:
    • As a whole class activity, brainstorm what children know and would like to find out about recycling and taking care of our environment.
    • Through readings, discussions, and walks students will identify ways in which people care for the earth.
    • Following the walk discuss as a class ways in which they found people helping the earth.
    • Students will be guided in the process of making "Dirt Dessert".
    • Students will be guided through the procedures in using Imagination Express-Neighborhood and Story Book Weaver Software to create a multimedia project about ecology.
    • Students will experience poetry and songs about ecology.
    • Guide students through the process of making paper.
